M2 House lays at the outskirts of Bend (OR), in a western suburb called Tetherow. The landscape here has a radical beauty. We wanted to establish a powerful volumetric relationship with it, creating a dialogue at the same height of radicality. But at the same time, the interior should be soft and have a domestic scale. The plan is designed as a continuous space around a series of different size patios blending exterior areas with interior spaces. The house is at the same time compact and porous, minimizing the footprint and thus allowing the landscape to take over the area.

The pororus house

M2 House lays at the outskirts of Bend (OR), in a western suburb called Tetherow. The landscape here has a radical beauty. We wanted to establish a powerful volumetric relationship with it, creating a dialogue at the same height of radicality. But at the same time, the interior should be soft and have a domestic scale. The plan is designed as a continuous space around a series of different size patios blending exterior areas with interior spaces. The house is at the same time compact and porous, minimizing the footprint and thus allowing the landscape to take over the area.

Spatial organization

The house is organized in two floors. The ground floor hosts the main uses, which are organized on different levels providing different views to the distant landscape. This allows multiple relations with the exterior at different levels, generating many ways of interaction and a certain independence. The second floor presents a rooftop garden facing the mountains.

Compacity and porosity

The house design strategy relies in the opposition of a compact, very controlled interior, which is perforated through a series of patios. This provides a multiple-relation field where domestic life flows along different interiors and exteriors in a very unexpected way.

Landscape concept

The landscape proposal is based on the minimum-footprint strategy. The patios will be planted with domestic species, creating very special backgrounds for the different areas of the house, either public or private. The house will be covered by a roof garden, designed with the same approach as the existing landscape, bringing nature to the upper level of the house
